Why is it important for Christians to understand the law's purpose?

Answered in 1 source

Understanding the law's purpose clarifies our need for grace and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

The law serves multiple purposes, foremost being to reveal sin and guilt. In Galatians 3:19, Paul asks, 'Wherefore then serveth the law?' The answer is that the law was added because of transgressions, to highlight humanity's inability to meet God's perfect standards and the consequent need for a Savior. By recognizing the law's demands, we are led to despair of our self-righteousness and to seek refuge in Christ. Grasping the law's purpose reinforces faith in Jesus, the only one who can redeem us and provide the righteousness we cannot achieve on our own.
