Why is it important for Christians to understand their identity as sheep?

Answered in 4 sources

Understanding our identity as sheep reassures us of God's grace, our eternal security, and our call to love and serve others (1 Peter 1:5).

For Christians, grasping the truth of being one of Christ's sheep is foundational to their faith. It provides assurance of salvation, as believers recognize they are not saved by their works but by the grace of God through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). This identity as sheep also instills a sense of purpose; having been chosen and redeemed, believers are called to serve Christ by serving others, demonstrating the love they have received. Furthermore, knowing that they are kept by the power of God (1 Peter 1:5) allows Christians to live boldly without fear of losing their salvation, resting in the knowledge that Christ will complete the work He has begun in them.
