Why is it important for Christians to understand their spiritual deadness?

The realization of our spiritual deadness is foundational to a proper understanding of the Gospel. As disclosed in Ephesians 2:1, we are 'dead in trespasses and sins,' indicating that before God's intervention, we are incapable of choosing Him or doing anything to merit salvation.
