Why is it important not to build our hope on our works?

Answered in 1 source

Building hope on works is dangerous because our best efforts are insufficient for salvation and can lead to eternal separation from God.

Jesus emphasizes in Matthew 7:21-23 that not everyone who claims to know Him will enter the kingdom of heaven. Many will boast of their works—prophecies, exorcisms, and miracles—yet Christ will declare, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you who work iniquity.' The reliance on personal works or achievements can lead to false confidence, as even the most charitable deeds can become an expression of iniquity if they are not rooted in faith in Christ. True assurance of salvation rests on Christ's finished work and righteousness, not on our performance. Therefore, Christians should anchor their hope in Christ alone to avoid ultimate disillusionment.
