Why is it important not to return to the law after believing the gospel?

Answered in 1 source

Returning to the law undermines the grace of God and is a primary sin that believers are warned against.

Paul addresses the grave danger of turning back to the law in several of his letters, particularly to the Galatians and Romans. He argues that the law was given to declare men guilty, and turning back to it constitutes a rejection of the grace that is found in Christ alone. In Romans 6, he explains that believers are dead to sin and the law because of their union with Christ, thus making them free from condemnation. The sin of returning to the law signifies a misunderstanding of the gospel and can lead a believer to rely on their own works for justification, which is ultimately futile and denies the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.
