Why is it important to believe in Jesus before baptism?

Answered in 1 source

Believing in Jesus is crucial as baptism signifies the public profession of that faith.

Baptism serves as a powerful outward sign of an inward change—that is, the believer’s faith in Jesus Christ. As seen in the narrative of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, before baptism, Philip preached the gospel, specifically focusing on Jesus. The eunuch's desire for baptism came only after his affirmation of faith in Christ, which is fundamentally why belief is essential before undergoing baptism. This aligns with Romans 10:10, where it states, 'For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.' Thus, baptism without faith is rendered meaningless, whereas it is a significant testament to the believer's heartfelt trust in Jesus.
