Why is it important to distinguish between the true and false gospel?

Answered in 1 source

Distinguishing between the true and false gospel is crucial for understanding salvation, which is solely through Christ's work and not through our efforts.

The importance of discerning the true gospel from false gospels cannot be overstated. As indicated in Matthew 7:15, false prophets may appear as true teachers, leading many astray. The true gospel emphasizes that salvation is accomplished entirely by Christ and his redemptive work, not by human efforts or decisions (Ephesians 2:8-9). If believers rely on their own works or decisions, they essentially undermine the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement. Therefore, understanding and adhering to the true gospel allows believers to rest in the assurance of their salvation found in Christ alone, rather than being led into confusion and destruction by false teachings.
