Why is it important to not serve two masters?

Answered in 1 source

Serving two masters divides one's allegiance and leads to spiritual conflict; one must choose between God and materialism (Matthew 6:24).

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus declares, 'No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.' This teaching underscores the necessity of single-hearted devotion. A split allegiance between God and material concerns creates a conflict that impairs one’s spiritual growth. True worship and submission to Christ as King requires unwavering commitment. As believers, we must assess what or who demands our loyalty and determine whether these distractions hinder our relationship with Christ. Hence, a genuine follower of Christ must prioritize His kingdom over worldly interests.
