Why is it important to understand that we cannot mix old and new covenants?

Answered in 1 source

Understanding the distinction between the old and new covenants is vital to grasping the full message of the Gospel and the nature of our salvation.

The distinction between the old and new covenants is crucial because the old covenant, characterized by law and conditional promises, has been fulfilled in Christ through the new covenant of grace. Attempting to integrate components of the old covenant, such as ritual fasting or ceremonial laws, into the new life in Christ dilutes the power of the Gospel and misrepresents the transformative work of salvation. Believers are called to embrace the newness of life that Christ provides, reasoning that those who have trusted in Him are new creations — the old has passed away and everything has become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). This truth frees us from the obligations of the law and allows us to live fully in the grace of God.
