Why is it important to understand the role of the high priest in atonement?

Answered in 1 source

The high priest's role is crucial as he acts as the mediator between God and man, representing the need for a perfect mediator, which is fulfilled in Christ.

Understanding the high priest's role in the atonement process is vital as it illustrates the necessity of mediation between God and humanity. In Leviticus 16, the high priest Aaron, chosen by God, performs sacrifices on behalf of the people to atone for their sins. This foreshadowing is completely realized in Christ, our true High Priest, who mediates for us before God. Unlike Aaron, who had to offer sacrifices for his own sins, Christ was without sin and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 4:15). His unique mediation provides an access to God that no earthly priest can offer, solidifying our assurance that our sins are forgiven and our debt to God has been satisfied.
