Why is it said that loving one another is a new commandment?

Answered in 1 source

It is considered a new commandment because through Christ, we gain a new understanding of love exemplified by Him.

The commandment to love one another is described as new because it finds its truest expression in Jesus Christ, who exemplified perfect love in His life and sacrifice. John 13:34 states, 'A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another; as I have loved you.' This newness is rooted in the revelation of Christ, who fulfills the law's requirements through His sacrificial love. Before His coming, the concept of love was not fully realized. Now, the believer's call is to emulate Christ's love, which transforms relationships and lives, establishing a new standard of love that reflects God’s nature.
