Why is Jesus called our great high priest?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is the great high priest who intercedes for us and offers Himself as the perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 4:14-15).

The title 'great high priest' given to Jesus reflects His unique role in the redemptive plan of God. Unlike the high priests of the Old Testament who offered sacrifices for their own sins as well as for the people, Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, fulfilling and surpassing the requirements of the law. Hebrews 4:14 speaks of Him passing into the heavens, representing our needs before the Father. His incarnation means He can empathize with our weaknesses, having experienced temptation yet remained without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Therefore, He is the perfect mediator who provides access to God for all believers.
