Why is Jesus described as our righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is our righteousness because He perfectly fulfilled the law and is the only one who can present us as righteous before God.

In sovereign grace theology, the righteousness of Christ is pivotal for salvation. As it states in 2 Corinthians 5:21, 'For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.' Jesus lived a sinless life and fulfilled the demands of the law on our behalf. His sacrificial death satisfied God's justice, allowing Him to credit His righteousness to those who believe. Therefore, through faith in Christ, we can stand before God clothed in His righteousness, not our own (Philippians 3:9). This profound truth assures believers that their acceptance before God is not contingent on personal merit but solely on the finished work of Christ.
