Why is Jesus referred to as the express image of God?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is called the express image of God because He perfectly represents and reveals the nature of God to humanity.

In Hebrews 1:3, Jesus is identified as the express image of God's person. This means that He is the exact representation of God's being, embodying the fullness of the Godhead in human form. When one sees Jesus, they see the Father, as He uniquely embodies God's characteristics, love, and truth. This emphasizes the doctrine of the incarnation, where Jesus, fully God and fully man, reveals God's nature and will directly to us, making Him the ultimate mediator between humanity and God.
