Why is judging according to appearance problematic?

Answered in 1 source

Judging by appearance is misleading and can result in serious errors about individuals and situations (John 7:24).

Judging according to appearance leads to misunderstanding and misapplication of God's truth. For instance, in John 7:19-24, the Jews wrongly judged Jesus based on their preconceived ideas and traditions rather than the truth of His ministry and identity. This error highlights the importance of seeking righteousness in judgment, which requires deeper insight into God's character and purpose. In doing so, we avoid the superficiality that can result in wrongful accusations and a lack of compassion. In every aspect—whether toward others, circumstances, or ourselves—we must strive to discern God's truth rather than rely on what is seen or perceived at first glance.
