Why is knowing Christ important for understanding the law?

Answered in 1 source

Without knowing Christ, one's understanding of the law remains incomplete and can lead to self-righteousness rather than true righteousness (Mark 12:34).

Understanding the law apart from Christ can lead to a misunderstanding of its purpose. The law serves to reveal our sinfulness and our inability to fulfill its demands, emphasizing our need for a Savior. In Mark 12:34, Jesus points out that the scribe, while knowledgeable, lacked the key element of faith in Him, the embodiment of the law. Knowing Christ illuminates the purpose of the law: it is not a ladder to climb to God but a mirror that reflects our need for grace and mercy through Jesus, who fulfills the law righteously. Hence, true understanding comes from a relationship with Him, enabling believers to appreciate the law's holiness while resting in Christ's redemptive work.
