Why is knowing Christ's righteousness essential for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Christ's righteousness is essential because only through Him can we be deemed righteous before God.

Salvation hinges on righteousness, but not on our own works; it must be the righteousness of Christ that is credited to us. Paul notes in Romans that the Jews were unaware of God's righteousness and sought to establish their own, which is insufficient before a holy God. If one wishes to enter God's kingdom, they must be as holy as God Himself, which is impossible through human efforts.

The righteousness that God accepts is found in Christ alone, as seen in Romans 10:4, where it declares that 'Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.' This signifies that through faith in Christ, believers are clothed in His righteousness. Thus, the believer’s standing before God hinges entirely on Christ’s perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, affirming that we cannot attain righteousness on our own but must rely on Christ’s work on our behalf to be justified before God.
