Why is love considered a restraint against sin for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Love for God serves as a powerful motivator that restrains believers from sinning.

As expressed in Romans 12:1, believers are urged to present their bodies as living sacrifices, motivated by God's mercies. This appeal is rooted in the love that God has shown us, which compels us to respond in love, thus restraining us from sin. The understanding that we are loved by God—who sacrificed His Son for us—should lead us to a deep desire to honor Him by living righteously. In essence, when our hearts are filled with love for God, we find that we naturally want to avoid actions that would bring shame to Him or compromise our relationship with Him. This love ultimately leads us away from sinful behaviors and towards a life that glorifies God.
