Why is love considered the greatest commandment in Christianity?

Answered in 1 source

Love is the greatest commandment as it encapsulates the entire law and expresses the very nature of God.

The essence of Christian ethics revolves around love, which fulfills all the commandments of God. When Jesus declared the greatest commandment was to love God and love one's neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40), He summarized the entire Old Testament law. Love reflects God's character—'God is love' (1 John 4:8)—and is the driving force behind the life of a believer. Without love, other spiritual gifts and actions are rendered meaningless, as indicated in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. Love is indispensable for maintaining a right relationship with God and others, thus making it the highest calling of believers.
