Why is love the end of the commandment?

Answered in 1 source

Love is the end of the commandment because it encapsulates the purpose and aim of all God’s commands (1 Timothy 1:5).

In 1 Timothy 1:5, Paul states, 'Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart.' The purpose of God's commandments is ultimately to foster love – love for God and love for our neighbors. This love is the fulfillment of the Law, as illustrated in Matthew 22:35-40, where Jesus emphasizes that the greatest commandments revolve around love. The Law cannot produce this love within us; it is only the gospel and the new birth that can create such love in our hearts, making it essential for true Christian living.
