Why is loving our neighbor as ourselves important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Loving our neighbor is a reflection of God's command and a demonstration of our obedience to His law.

Loving our neighbor is central to fulfilling God's law, which commands us to love Him first and extend that love to others. In Matthew 5, Jesus stresses that anger and malice, even in thought, violate this command. This principle illustrates that our religious practices cannot substitute genuine love and reconciliation towards others. Moreover, 1 John 4:20 affirms that if we do not love others whom we can see, we cannot truly love God whom we cannot see. Therefore, this love becomes a vital sign of our faith and obedience to God’s commands.
