Why is maintaining unity important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Maintaining unity among Christians is vital for collective worship and fulfilling God's purpose in the church.

Christian unity is of utmost importance as it embodies the essence of the church as the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:1-6 emphasizes walking in a manner worthy of our calling, which includes keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. This unity reflects our collective identity as members of one body, where each individual play a significant role (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). It enables the church to function effectively, promotes mutual support and edification, and fulfills Christ’s command that His followers be united (John 17:21). A divided church cannot effectively fulfill its mission or witness to the world, thus highlighting the necessity of striving for unity.
