Why is personal righteousness important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Personal righteousness is essential as it reflects one's acceptance before God, solely through Christ's righteousness.

In sovereign grace theology, personal righteousness is viewed in light of the imputed righteousness of Christ. Only through Christ's work can believers be deemed righteous in God's sight. The notion is not that individuals possess their own righteousness but that they are clothed in the righteousness of Christ, as stated in passages like Romans 5:19. This understanding prevents the fall into antinomianism or pharisaism by acknowledging that all righteousness comes from Christ alone, making Him the basis for our acceptance with God. Without this understanding, one may err by attempting to establish personal merit rather than resting fully in Christ’s finished work.
