Why is pride a sin according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Pride is condemned in the Bible as it leads to self-exaltation and separates one from God’s grace.

The Bible describes pride as a foremost sin that opposes God’s nature. In Proverbs 6:16-19, the Lord explicitly states that a proud look is among the first things He hates, highlighting the repulsion pride generates in Him. Pride signifies self-reliance and self-importance, which contradict the call to humility and dependence on God. Jesus teaches us in Luke 14:11 that those who exalt themselves will be humbled. Thus, the essence of pride lies in an inflated view of oneself that neglects God's sovereign grace and sovereignty over our lives. Believers are called to recognize that everything we possess is a gift from God, thus fostering an attitude of gratitude rather than pride, as articulated in 1 Corinthians 4:7.
