Why is pride considered a sin in Scripture?

Answered in 1 source

Pride is a sin because it opposes God and leads us to rely on our own understanding rather than on Him.

Pride is considered a sin in Scripture because it places self above God, promoting an illusion of self-sufficiency and righteousness apart from divine grace. Proverbs 8:13 states, 'The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil; pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.' This reflects God's innate opposition to anything that diminishes His glory, including pride. When individuals elevate themselves, they obscure God's holiness and undermine their own need for salvation. Pride leads to a hardened heart and blinds us to the truth of the Gospel, making it a significant barrier to true faith.
