Why is propitiation essential in reconciliation?

Answered in 1 source

Propitiation is essential because it addresses God’s righteous anger against sin, enabling reconciliation to occur.

Propitiation serves as the foundation for reconciliation, as it satisfies the wrath of God towards sinners. The death of Christ functions as the propitiatory sacrifice that appeases divine justice, allowing God to look favorably upon the elect (1 John 4:10). Reconciliation cannot happen apart from this divine transaction; Christ's death removed God's anger and made way for a restored relationship between Him and humanity. It clarifies that reconciliation originates from God's action, not from the offender's attempts to mediate their own repair with Him.
