Why is recognizing human depravity important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Acknowledging human depravity emphasizes our need for grace and draws us closer to God for redemption.

Human depravity is critical in Reformed theology as it reveals the depth of our sinfulness and the reality that we cannot save ourselves. As Jeremiah 17:9 states, 'The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.' Recognizing our depravity leads us to understand our complete dependence on God's grace for salvation. Without this understanding, we may not fully appreciate the significance of Christ's atoning work on the cross. Through acknowledging our fallen nature, we are compelled to seek God's mercy and embrace the hope of redemption found in Jesus alone.
