Why is recognizing our spiritual poverty essential for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Recognizing our spiritual poverty is essential because it leads us to genuinely rely on Christ for salvation.

Understanding our spiritual poverty is central to the gospel message. Jesus declared that He came to preach good news to the poor (Luke 4:18). Those who see themselves as spiritually bankrupt understand that they have nothing to commend themselves to God and are, therefore, primed to receive grace. This realization is the beginning of true faith, as it compels us to look outside of ourselves to Christ for our salvation. Only when we acknowledge our inability and deep need can we grasp the fullness of God's grace, which offers forgiveness and redemption. It is this recognition that ultimately positions us to hear and accept the grace words spoken by Christ.
