Why is regeneration essential in Reformed theology?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is essential because it is the divine act of God that changes a person's heart and allows them to respond to the gospel in faith.

In Reformed theology, regeneration is viewed as a critical work of the Holy Spirit, whereby an individual is born again. This transformation is not a result of human effort or decision but is solely the work of God’s grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 illuminates this concept, asserting that salvation is a gift from God—not from works—so that no one may boast. Regeneration enables a person to recognize their sinfulness, understand the gospel, and turn to Christ in faith. As such, it underscores the sovereign nature of God's grace in salvation, as He actively changes the hearts of His elect to receive His truth.
