Why is relying on our own righteousness a mistake for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on our own righteousness leads to deception, as all our best efforts fall short of God's holiness.

The belief that one can stand before God based on personal righteousness is a perilous misconception. Proverbs 16:2 warns that 'all the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes,' underscoring how easily individuals can be deceived regarding their spiritual condition. Romans 3:10 states that 'there is none righteous, no, not one,' revealing that human righteousness cannot meet God’s standard. Instead, Christians are called to trust in Christ's righteousness, who is the sole source of hope and redemption, as our works are ultimately rooted in His grace alone, not our ability to achieve moral perfection.
