Why is relying on our own works dangerous for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on our own works is dangerous because it leads to pride and ultimately results in spiritual ruin.

Trusting in our works is perilous because it contradicts the essence of the gospel, which teaches that salvation is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly states that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast. When Christians rely on their own merits, they risk becoming like the Pharisees, who were blinded by their self-righteousness. Consequently, this self-reliance can lead to despair when one inevitably fails to meet God's perfect standard, underscoring the need for continual dependence on Christ and His redemptive grace.
