Why is relying on works for salvation a mistake?

Answered in 1 source

Relying on works for salvation is misguided because it underestimates the insufficiency of human efforts before a holy God.

The belief that human works can lead to salvation stems from a misunderstanding of divine holiness and our own sinful state. Isaiah's message warns against empty religion and reliance on outward deeds, which can never satisfy God's requirements (Isaiah 2:22). Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works, which means that any reliance on personal merit is ultimately doomed to fail. Our works can never attain the perfect righteousness mandated by God; instead, we must rest in the completed work of Christ, who bore our sins and offers us His righteousness.
