Why is repentance essential for overcoming self-righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

Repentance is essential for overcoming self-righteousness as it requires us to acknowledge our flaws and embrace Christ's righteousness alone.

Repentance strips away the pretensions of self-righteousness, allowing us to confront the reality of our sinfulness. As long as we view our own righteousness positively, we cannot truly repent or turn to Christ for salvation. This acknowledgment of our spiritual bankruptcy is vital, as it positions us to fully appreciate the depth of God's mercy (2 Corinthians 7:10). Without repentance, self-righteousness continues to blind us, preventing the transformative power of the Gospel from taking root in our hearts, as we remain focused on our own perceived goodness instead of Christ’s sufficiency.
