Why is self-denial necessary according to Mark 9?

Answered in 1 source

Self-denial is necessary because anything that distracts from our relationship with Christ must be removed, even at great personal cost.

In Mark 9, Jesus teaches that strict self-denial is essential for discipleship. He uses hyperbolic language about cutting off hands and plucking out eyes to convey the seriousness with which one must address anything that leads to sin or distracts from him. This illustrates that our devotion to Christ must take precedence over worldly attachments or personal comforts. The underlying principle is that genuine faith involves a willingness to prioritize our relationship with Christ above all else, to willingly give up even the most cherished things that might impede our spiritual journey. This mirrors the teaching of Paul that to be Christ’s disciple, one must forfeit everything in pursuit of Him.
