Why is self-judgment important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Self-judgment is crucial as it leads to humility, recognition of one’s sinfulness, and a reliance on God's mercy.

Jesus emphasizes in Matthew 7:3-5 the necessity of self-examination before judging others, pointing out the hypocrisy of focusing on the faults of others while ignoring one's own. He labels this behavior as hypocritical and calls for individuals to first remove the 'beam' from their own eye to see clearly. This process of self-judgment fosters humility, as believers confront their own sinfulness and recognize that they, too, are in need of God's grace.

Moreover, Paul’s assertion in 1 Corinthians 11:31 that 'if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged' reinforces this idea. When Christians regularly assess their own lives against the standards of Scripture, they are better equipped to show mercy to others and partake in the joy of God’s forgiveness, ultimately deepening their relationship with God and enhancing their witness to others.
