Why is self-knowledge essential for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Self-knowledge helps us recognize our sinfulness and need for God's mercy, crucial for true repentance and salvation.

Self-knowledge is essential because it confronts us with the reality of our sinful condition. As the Publican prayed in the temple, he understood his unworthiness and admitted his need for God's mercy. When we truly see ourselves as sinners, as portrayed in Romans 3:10-12, we can turn to Christ for salvation. This awareness is the first step toward repentance, acknowledging that we cannot save ourselves but rely entirely on Christ's sacrificial death for our justification.
