Why is self-righteousness a danger in Christianity?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness undermines the necessity of Christ's sacrifice and leads to a false understanding of salvation (Galatians 2:21).

Self-righteousness poses a significant danger within Christianity as it promotes the belief that individuals can achieve righteousness through their own efforts. This inclination to rely on works rather than on the grace of God frustrates the core message of the Gospel. As Paul states in Galatians 2:21, if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ's sacrifice is rendered unnecessary. When individuals seek to justify themselves through their actions, they effectively reject the salvation that Christ accomplished through His death on the cross, thus committing a grave error against the very essence of the Gospel. It leads to spiritual pride and a misunderstanding of human depravity, making believers indifferent to the true nature of grace.
