Why is self-righteousness a dead end for salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness leads to death because it denies the sufficiency of Christ's righteousness.

Self-righteousness is a common deception that blinds many to the truth of their condition before God. Proverbs 14:12 warns that 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.' This illustrates the danger of relying on one's own works or abilities to attain righteousness. In contrast, true righteousness is only found in Christ, who is the believer's substitute and mediator. Ephesians 2:8-9 affirms that salvation is by grace through faith, not by works, lest anyone should boast. Therefore, any reliance on self is ultimately misleading and futile, leading to spiritual death, while faith in Christ grants true life and righteousness.
