Why is sin a barrier to reconciliation with God?

Answered in 1 source

Sin creates separation from God, making reconciliation impossible without His grace.

Sin stands as the fundamental barrier between humanity and God, as explained in Isaiah 59:2, which says that our iniquities separate us from God. This separation means that reconciliation cannot be wrought by our own efforts, as we are spiritually dead and incapable of seeking God (Romans 5:19). The consequence of sin is that we are alienated from the source of life and grace. Reconciliation requires God's intervention through justice being satisfied. This is fulfilled in Christ, who bore our sins and reconciled us to the Father through His sacrifice, allowing us to overcome the barrier that our sin created.
