Why is the Ark of the Covenant significant in the Old Testament?

Answered in 2 sources

The Ark of the Covenant was God's physical representation among His people and signified His presence and covenant relationship.

The Ark of the Covenant held immense significance in the Old Testament as it represented God's presence among His people. It was housed in the Holy of Holies and contained the tablets of the law, signifying God's covenant with Israel. The high priest would enter this sacred space once a year on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat above the Ark, thus symbolizing atonement for the sins of the people. However, Jeremiah prophesies a future where this physical representation will no longer be needed as God's presence will be fully realized through Christ, fulfilling the need for the Ark with His own life and sacrifice for sin.
