Why is the atonement necessary for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Atonement is necessary for Christians because it satisfies God's justice and reconciles us to Him.

The necessity of atonement arises from God's nature as just and holy. Sin incurs a debt that must be paid; therefore, atonement is essential to restore the relationship between God and sinners. As portrayed in 2 Samuel 21, the famine in Israel was a direct result of sin, requiring an appropriate sacrifice to remedy the situation. In the same way, our sin necessitates Christ’s atonement, which is the only means through which we can be reconciled to God. The atonement ensures that God's justice is satisfied while His love is demonstrated to His people, highlighting the depth of His grace and mercy that saves us from death and separation from Him.
