Why is the balance of divine sovereignty and human responsibility important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Balancing divine sovereignty with human responsibility prevents fatalism and encourages active faith and engagement in God's means of grace.

The balance between divine sovereignty and human responsibility is crucial in the life of a believer because it shapes our understanding of God and our role in the world. Without recognizing God's sovereignty, one may fall into fatalism, believing that our actions hold no significant weight in God's plan. This leads to indifference, as individuals may reason that their efforts are pointless if God has already decided who will be saved. Conversely, emphasizing human responsibility without acknowledging divine sovereignty can lead to despair, as it places the weight of salvation on individual efforts which inevitably fall short. Properly understanding both aspects allows Christians to confidently respond to God's call, knowing He is sovereign while also actively participating in His means of grace, such as prayer, preaching, and witnessing, all of which serve to accomplish His divine purpose.
