Why is the call to follow Christ costly?

Answered in 1 source

Following Christ requires a cost as it often involves sacrificing worldly pleasures and possessions.

The cost of discipleship is deeply rooted in Scripture and highlighted throughout the New Testament. When individuals commit to following Christ, they may find themselves at odds with societal norms and materialistic pursuits, much like the craftsmen in Ephesus who were threatened by the growth of the Christian faith. Jesus Himself spoke of this cost in Luke 14:27, stating that to follow Him, one must carry their cross. This signifies a willingness to forsake all in pursuit of a relationship with Him. The uproar at Ephesus exemplifies how resistance to the Gospel can arise when lives are disrupted by the call to abandon sin and submit to Christ’s Lordship.
