Why is the clergy-laity divide problematic in churches?

Answered in 1 source

This divide can lead to passivity among church members and diminish the essential role of every believer in ministry.

The clergy-laity divide suggests that ministry is reserved for a select few, when in fact every believer is called to minister. Scriptures like 1 Peter 2:5-9 affirm that all Christians are priests, capable of serving and fulfilling ministry roles. This division can result in church members becoming passive observers, failing to engage with their spiritual gifts or participate actively in church life. To align with the biblical model, churches must dismantle this divide and encourage every believer to engage in the ministry of the body.
