Why is the concept of being a 'self-made man' problematic?

Answered in 1 source

The idea of a 'self-made man' contradicts biblical teaching that all we have and are is by God's grace and not our own achievements.

The notion of being a 'self-made man' is problematic because it fosters pride and a sense of independence from God. Scripture clearly states that 'by the grace of God, we are what we are' (1 Corinthians 15:10), highlighting that all gifts, abilities, and successes come from God. This aligns with the biblical assertion that boasting about personal achievements robs God of His glory. Instead of glorifying our self-made accomplishments, we should recognize our dependence on God's grace and acknowledge Him as the source of our strengths and abilities. In humility, we should celebrate what God has done in us rather than claim any credit for ourselves.
