Why is the concept of compassion important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Compassion stems from understanding our own state as sinners and reflects the love of Christ toward others.

For Christians, compassion is paramount as it reflects the nature of Christ and our understanding of our own brokenness. Recognizing ourselves as lepers—sinners in desperate need of cleansing—cultivates a heart of compassion towards others in similar desperation. Jesus exemplifies this in His ministry, consistently responding to human suffering with empathy and action. As believers, we are called to imitate Christ's compassion, reaching out to others who are lost, hurting, and in need. This is not just a moral obligation but stems from the joy of receiving such mercy ourselves; we love because He first loved us. Through compassion, we engage in the work of the Gospel, bringing hope and healing to a world that mirrors the leper’s plight.
