Why is the concept of eternal generation important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Eternal generation is crucial as it affirms the relationship between the Father and the Son, establishing Jesus's divinity and His role in our salvation.

Eternal generation refers to the belief that the Son is begotten of the Father but is not created; He is of the same essence as the Father. This doctrine is foundational for Christians as it underscores that Jesus Christ is truly God, eternally existing with the Father before time began (Proverbs 8:22-23). Recognizing Christ as the only begotten of the Father helps believers understand the unique relationship within the Trinity and the authority of Christ as our mediator. Only a being who is both fully God and fully man can adequately represent both sides in the reconciliation between God and humanity, which is critical for the atonement of our sins and our salvation.
