Why is the concept of free will important in Christian theology?

Answered in 1 source

Free will is often emphasized in contrast to God's sovereignty, but the Bible reveals that true freedom is found in Christ alone.

In Christian theology, the concept of free will is often discussed concerning the nature of salvation and human ability. Many human religions prioritize the free will of man and suggest that people possess the innate ability to choose God. However, this idea fundamentally contradicts Scripture, which teaches that salvation is entirely dependent on God's grace and His sovereign choice. The message of the gospel reveals that apart from Christ, man cannot come to God (John 6:44). Understanding this is vital for believers as it aligns with the doctrine of Total Depravity (the 'T' in TULIP), affirming that humans are incapable of choosing salvation without divine intervention.
