Why is the concept of mortifying sin important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Mortifying sin is crucial for Christians as it allows them to live in accordance with their new identity in Christ.

Paul’s exhortation to 'mortify therefore your members' (Colossians 3:5) highlights the important battle against sin that every believer must engage in. While believers possess a new nature in Christ, they still carry the remnants of their fallen nature. Thus, daily crucifying the flesh is essential to align one's life with the truth of the gospel. This is not about achieving salvation through works but about acknowledging and actively resisting the sinful tendencies that oppose the believer's identity in Christ, moving towards holiness empowered by grace.
