Why is the concept of self-righteousness important for Christians?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness is dangerous because it blinds individuals to their own sinfulness and undermines the grace that is central to the Gospel.

In the sermon, self-righteousness is portrayed as a pervasive issue that leads to judgment of others while ignoring one’s own faults. Luke 12 warns against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, indicating that self-righteousness can blind us to our true spiritual condition. Christians must understand that self-righteousness not only hinders our relationship with God, but it creates barriers between us and fellow believers. The Gospel teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and as such, we are called to humbly approach the throne of grace, acknowledging our need for Christ's redemptive work in our lives. Only in recognizing our own brokenness can we fully appreciate the love and grace of our Savior, and extend that grace to others.
